Building your profile

The résumé import created too many or wrong skills… what do I do?

Choose in the review, then promote rather than delete. Each new skill an import finds is listed in its review with the level proposed for it, and only the skills you leave ticked are saved; a skill already on your profile appears only where something about it changes. After you apply, the usual cleanup is moving the ones you genuinely are strong in up to the Strong column.

Publishing needs at least three Strong skills, and a cautious import can leave you below that line.

Detail

In the review. Each new skill appears under Skills as "New skill", with its name, the level proposed for it ("Strong", "Moderate" or "Still developing"), and any years and evidence. Untick any skill you do not want before you choose Apply to profile. Each skill you keep lands in the column that matches its level. Importing a résumé or profile document: upload, review, apply describes the whole review.

Why it looks under-rated. The import is deliberately cautious. It can propose any of the three levels: it uses a level your file states, and otherwise proposes "Strong" only where your file shows real depth, so a skill your file only lists usually arrives as "Moderate", and one you are still learning as "Still developing". Check each proposed level. So a list that looks thin is the import working as designed, not a failure. The usual cleanup is promoting the ones you genuinely are strong in.

Open the Skills tab and change each card’s Category until the columns match how you would actually describe yourself.

Profile Skills Tab - main screen
Build an accurate profile by moving each skill to the column that matches it, using the card’s Category menu.

Importing again proposes only changes. A second import is compared with your profile as it is now. A skill with the same name as one on your profile is not added again, and a different level for it shows as a change that starts unticked, so a skill you have placed stays where you put it unless you tick the change.

If you have genuine duplicates, delete them by hand. An import compares skills by name, so a skill written differently, such as "JS" and "JavaScript", arrives as a separate skill: check differently named skills in the review before you apply.

Also check roles. A role without a start date, a company or a title is never added as a new role. If it matches a role you already have, the review offers its bullets and private notes for that role; otherwise it is listed under "Add these roles by hand", so you can add it on the Experience tab.

Nothing is written until you click "Apply to profile", so the review screen is the cheapest place to catch problems. How often you can upload is on the Limits page.
